I use to work for Burberry and I know from a colleague from fraud department, any online transaction up to £300 is insured and they will get the money str8 away, if is more than that they have to fill a form and is becoming a long process. 

So my guess, is the same with Uber, nothing to worry until £300    this is the reason you didn't had any problems     anything between £200 and £300 is acceptable

I got the email from Uber saying that from 1st of May they will update the app we are using.

Yes, but sometimes you spend maybe 10 minutes to get there and the surge price is on this time and by the time they cancel it the surge is off  

If you remember, they cut the prices first in US, than here in London, so maybe they will do the same with insurance, I think is a good thing!
